Program Activities:  See a selection of activities planned for the workshop below as UAB students and teaching assistants set up for the workshop.
Student Lauren Silverwood sets up a PCR reaction for amplification of DNA.
Lauren Silverwood inoculates culture growths for production of a poly(ADP-ribose) binding protein.
TAs Dr. Anupam Goel and Xuan Tan compare a 3D-printed model of a protein to its computer representation.
  • Modern biochemistry and molecular biology techniques applicable in research, drug discovery, biomedical engineering, medical diagnostics, and forensic chemistry
Lauren Silverwood and Dr. Anupam Goel prepare for an experiment.
Separation and detection of proteins by electrophoresis.
TAs Robert Hammond and Matthew Chan perform a magnetic resonance experiment.
  • Separate and study proteins by electrophoresis and magnetic resonance to "see" and understand how molecules behave!
TA Matthew Chan prepares to sterilize culture media.
Students Ashley Wylie and Allie Worrell measure the pH of solutions.
Lauren Silverwood weighs out reagents.
  • Meet UAB undergraduate, graduate and medical students who can answer your questions about programs in chemistry, biochemistry, and health careers
  • Speak with advisors, admissions, financial aid personnel about requirements and the many different programs open to you
  • Plus... have a lot of fun!
Seminar/Discussion Sessions:   Behind-the-scenes tours; Opportunities for science careers; Visit medical facilities and learn about pre-med opportunities and requirements; College admission and life!
