Presenter: Kate Hayden
Discussion summary:
We discussed Kulkarni et al., J. Lipid Res. 1994, 35, 159. The paper describes a new method for the analysis of plasma lipoproteins (HDL, LDL, VLDL, IDL, and Lp[a]) using the Vertical Auto Profile II method, based on ultracentrifugation at ~37,000 g and using only 18-40 ul of blood plasma. High resolution and minimal analysis time were achieved. This test is very important for heart health, and optimization of its implementation led to a successful company startup and growth.

Points that were discussed:
- Meaning of reproducibility scores
- Need to do cholesterol/triglyceride analyses along with lipoprotein profiles
- Lipoprotein unit meanings
- Changes in the method from 1980-2010
